Carmel - Carmel police say two major drug dealers are now behind bars after police found hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of drugs in their home.
Between the wreath on the door and the welcome mat, this Carmel home, north of 96th Street off Westfield Blvd., appears picture perfect.
But once you’ve seen the police photos taken inside the apartment the picture perfect illusion fades. Hamilton County Police say the photos of 300 thousand dollars worth of cocaine and marijuana are the end result of a tip to the Indianapolis Police Department.
Major Randy Schalburg is with the Hamilton County Drug Task Force. He explained what happened. “They received info from an out of state narcotics agency, stating there was a large source of cocaine and marijuana living in Hamilton County just inside Carmel.”
In addition to cocaine, police found 202 pounds of marijuana inside 9756 San Marco Pass, the shared apartment of 24-year-old Librado Plata and 23-year-old Sheila Varo.
Major Schalburg continued, “While doing the surveillance officers observed Plata and Varo exit the apartment carrying a white and red bag.”
Police say the couple then drove to the 5500 block of East 82nd Street and delivered that same shopping bag to a confidential source. That’s when police made their arrest.
Inside the bag, police found one kilo of cocaine.
“We believe it’s going to be a real large scale arrest especially impacting people out of state,” said Major Schalburg.
The Carmel apartment is not expected to be occupied anytime soon. Police say Librado is an illegal alien and has a $500,000 bail. Varo’s status is still being determined.
