TROY — A routine traffic stop for speeding turned into a major drug bust for Troy police who found 12 kilograms of cocaine — with a street value of $1.2 million — in the rear of a Ford Explorer.
Two Arlington, Ill. men arrested in the traffic stop on Interstate 75 Thursday were arraigned today on a charge of delivery of over 1,000 grams of a controlled substance. It is believed to be one of the largest drug seizures ever in Troy.
“That’s a large load of cocaine and we’re glad to get it off the street,” said Troy Police Lt. Gerry Scherlinck.
Scherlinck said two Troy traffic safety officers were focusing on speed enforcement around 5 p.m. Thursday on southbound Interstate 75 near Coolidge when the 2007 Ford Explorer whizzed by them in the right lane, tailgating another motorist and doing about 73 miles per hour. It is a posted 65 mile an hour zone at that location.
Police became suspicious when neither the driver, Anthony L. Gonzales, 21, nor Andon Filipi, 27, could produce a driver’s license and officers found more than $13,000 cash in the vehicle, Scherlinck said. The drugs were found plastic wrapped in 12 packages inside a duffle bag in the vehicle’s rear hatch..
The charge is a felony punishable by up to life in prison. Troy 52-4 Magistrate Donald Chisolm entered not guilty pleas for both men. Gonzales, also charged with driving without a license, was ordered held in the Oakland County Jail in lieu of $600,000 cash assurety, no 10 percent bond and Filipi on $1.2 million cash bond.
Both will have preliminary examinations on April 12 before Judge Dennis Drury.
