A federal judge today sent a 27-year-old gang member to prison for his role in a deadly 2005 shooting incident outside a Portland dance club in which at least 50 bullets — from five different weapons — sprayed downtown streets.

U.S. District Judge Anna J. Brown sentenced Corey Hudson to eight years’ imprisonment for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Hudson was one of three men accused in the Aug. 8, 2005, shooting outside The Vue nightclub, a shooting that left fellow gang member Adrian Bible dead.

The government took the case seriously because the three men accused in the crime had gang associations and serious criminal histories, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Edmonds, a former veteran of the Multnomah County district attorney’s office.

“We felt this was a very important case due to the voluminous number of shots fired in a public place, a high density area of the city,” he said. There were, he added, “hundreds of people down there attending this nightclub and in the vicinity of this nightclub.”

DNA evidence linked Hudson to one of the firearms found in possession of Deandros Brown, who was previously sentenced to 87 months in prison.

Hundreds arrested in Drug Bust

Law enforcement agencies in Kentucky have conducted a massive undercover drug sting. The operation took place all last week, just ending on Sunday.

Police say they made 491 arrests in a collective effort that involved law enforcement officials from all across the state.

Police say they can catch accused drug dealers as long as the money’s there to pay for the police crackdown.

Each of the busts has a story behind it. One story, from Bullet County, involves a baby hooked on cocaine. Police arrested the mother during the Byrne Operation and put the baby in the care of her grandmother.

But officials worry the funding to arrest those allegedly using drugs is running low. The federal Byrne program is considered a necessity to most counties. In Fayette County alone, the Byrne Operation netted 16 arrests, seized 115 pounds of marijuana and 4 vehicles.

Officials say meth labs are actually down 50 percent, but now crack cocaine use and illegal prescription drug use is up.

The Edward Byrne grant program is named for a New York City police officer killed at a young age by organized drug traffickers.

ESCANABA — In a recent four-countywide drug bust sweep, police arrested several suspects on drug charges and confiscated several items related to the manufacture and sale of illegal drugs, according to the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET).

On Friday, UPSET detectives conducted a search warrant for narcotics at a residence in Schoolcraft County. During a search of the Manistique Township home, police seized 217 marijuana plants in various stages of growth, according to a news release. Other items confiscated included firearms, money, growing equipment and other evidence of marijuana manufacturing and trafficking.

The drug bust was the result of UPSET detectives following up on information passed along to them from Manistique Public Safety Department. Also assisting with the search warrant were troopers from the Manistique State Police Post.

Last week, UPSET detectives and local police arrested 17 suspects on several illegal drug charges in Delta and Menominee counties. Three suspects were arrested on a six-count drug charge warrant and 14 suspects were arrested on 23 fugitive warrants, officials said. Those arrested were lodged in the Delta and Menominee county jails.

Assisting at the scene were officers from Delta County Sheriff Department, Menominee County Sheriff Department, Escanaba Public Safety, Gladstone Public Safety, and State Police from the Gladstone and Stephenson posts.

While the above drug bust was taking place, police also conducted a search warrant in Marquette County where marijuana, scales and money were located, according to a press release. Arrest warrants were pending on suspects in this investigation.

Anonymous tips regarding illegal drugs can be called into UPSET at 1-800-822-8202.

Nearby residents aren’t surprised by West Columbia drug bust

WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - More arrests are expected in a drug bust that netted 22 people in a West Columbia neighborhood near a school and a park where children play.

In addition to drugs, police also found weapons, ammo and cash.

When News 10 went out to talk to parents living in the area, we figured they’d be shocked by the news. But as that wasn’t the case at all.

The West Columbia neighborhood is home for Tiffany Scott. And for her, seeing drug deals go down is a way of life.

“You know what they’re going to do and with the kids around you don’t want them to see anything like that, you really don’t,” Scott told News 10.

You may expect her to be surprised that police arrested 21 people at this crack house behind where she lives. They made another bust directly across the street from her.

But she says she’s not surprised — more like relieved, especially for her children.

“I feel better for them. I feel safer for them because you never know when something might go down,” said Scott.

When, Scott says, or where. The crack busts were made about a mile from a school, and just a few feet away from the park where Tiffany’s kids play.

“We’ve had some stuff go on right in these yards, not drug related, but things where somebody might pull out a gun,” Scott said.

Lately Tiffany says she’s seen more police patrols in the morning and afternoon when her kids get dropped off from school. That may seem good on the surface, but she’s afraid that could backfire.

“You don’t want to force too much stuff. That does make people rebellious when you do a lot of forcing and stuff like that,” Scott told News 10.

She says to truly fix the problem you need more than patrols.

“Maybe have activities for them, summer is coming and there is nothing for them to do but walk around,” said Scott.

Overall Tiffany says she feels safe. But she says even now, after a major drug bust, the reality is that drugs will never be that far away.

“The normal thing they go do, they go pack up and go somewhere else. It will be near here but it won’t be in the same area,” said Scott.

News 10 spoke with the West Columbia Police Department Sunday, and investigators say this is an ongoing investigation.

Police have three other warrants out and expect to make at least three other arrests.

If only he had equipped his bicycle with a light, a Westwood man probably wouldn’t be facing felony charges right now.

Cincinnati police stopped George Williams, 42, of Westood late Saturday night for riding his bicycle without a headlight on the sidewalk near his Harrison Avenue home.

After officers learned his name, they discovered Williams was wanted on a telecommunications-harassment charge. Then, during a search of Williams, police found two straight razors, a baggie containing crack cocaine and a piece of paper containing powder cocaine, a police report says.

Williams now faces two felony drug possession charges along with misdemeanor charges of possessing drug abuse instruments.

He also is charged with the telecommunications offense and two bicycle-related citations.
