MCCLOUD — Wearing bulletproof vests and with guns drawn, state narcotics agents and Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office deputies lined up in front of an apartment door. One of the agents knocked.

“Sheriff’s office — we’re here to serve a warrant,” the agent shouted. “Open up!”
There was no answer. Using a key given to them by the apartment manager, the agent unlocked the door and law enforcement officers filed inside, moving room to room, looking for suspects.

“It’s cleared,” SCSO Capt. Jim Betts said. “No one’s home.” At approximately 9 a.m. Wednesday, a convoy of marked and unmarked vehicles rolled into the McCloud River Apartments’ parking lot at 110 Water Street in McCloud. Deputies and officers from various law enforcement agencies piled out of the vehicles and headed for their designated apartments.

“We’re serving three search warrants and seven arrest warrants,” Betts reported. He added that a few probation searches would be conducted.

Special Agent Dave Dunwoody of the Siskiyou Countywide Interagency Narcotics Task Force said the operation was the result of a three-month-long undercover investigation conducted at the apartments.

“We’ve received a lot of calls about this place (the apartments),” Dunwoody stated. “A lot of people in McCloud told us that there was a bad drug problem here.”
In March, SCINTF placed agents at the apartment complex, posing as renters. Dunwoody said that agents observed a number of people living at the apartments selling narcotics.

“The agents themselves were able to purchase narcotics as well,” he said.

Based on the undercover investigation’s result, Dunwoody was able to get the warrants and conduct the operation.

Seven arrests were made during the operation:

• Daniel Cruz, on the charge of sale of a controlled substance and an arrest warrant issued by the Siskiyou County Superior Court; • Warren Greenstreet, for an arrest warrant issued by the Siskiyou County Superior Court;

• Lucee Sabus, on the charges of child endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia, and sales of a controlled substance;

• Robin Hall, for a Violation of Probation warrant;

• Bobby Southard, on the charges of sale of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance;

• Nathan Tarwater, on the charge of sale of a controlled substance; and

• Sheila Markinson, on the charge of sale of a controlled substance.

Dunwoody reported that 8 children ages 3 to 12 years old living in the apartments had been taken into protective custody by Child Protective Services.

Along with the SCSO and members of the task force, agencies taking part in the operation were: Siskiyou County Probation Department, Siskiyou County District Attorney’s Office, Siskiyou County Child Protective Services, Shasta County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI.
