20 Gunmen fail to bust Italian out of Prison Hospital
-from reuters.com-
RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - A group of around 20 gunmen tried to bust an Italian held for drug trafficking out of a Brazilian prison hospital on Friday, but police foiled the movies-like escape attempt.
Globo news network quoted Rio state penitentiary department officials as saying the criminals, who were heavily armed and clad in black, exchanged intense fire with police before fleeing in several cars and abandoning Alessandro Castiglioni.
Castiglioni has been trying to climb over the hospital wall with two other inmates, but they were discovered by guards at the hospital in downtown Rio de Janeiro.
Police confirmed a shootout outside the hospital and prison close to the Rio City Hall, but had no other details. Nobody was hurt in the standoff, which occurred on the Good Friday holiday when the center of Rio is empty.
The hospital stands close to one of Rio’s shanty towns, which is dominated by drug traffickers.
Castiglioni was arrested in 2003 and charged with international drug trafficking, which included large shipments of cocaine via Brazil to European countries. Brazilian police suspect his ring of being linked to the Italian Mafia.

SALINAS (BCN)
A Salinas man was arrested Saturday after video evidence and witnesses linked him to a shooting earlier in the day, according to police.
Alejandro Alfaro, 20, was booked on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly shooting another 20-year-old Salinas man near the corner of Sanborn Road and East Laurel Drive shortly before 5:30 p.m., police reported.
The victim suffered a non-life-threatening wound, according to police.
Police are calling the shooting gang related.
Witnesses reported a man, thought by police to be Alfaro, walked up to the victim and fired several rounds from a handgun, striking the victim once, according to police. The suspect then fled in a white pickup truck.
One witness reportedly followed the truck and saw the suspect throw a gun out of the vehicle. The witness later led police to the gun.
A second witness followed the truck to a residence in North Salinas and contacted police, who went to the house and found Alfaro, who had a warrant out for his arrest, police reported.
A video from a business near the location of the shooting showed Alfaro shooting the victim, according to police.
According to police, the crime would likely not have been solved if the two witnesses had not come forward to police.
Hays County makes its first major Gambling Bust

Complaints about traffic and gambling tipped Hays County authorities off to three illegal gambling sites on Thursday.
Three months of surveillance and undercover work by the Hays County Narcotics Task Force led them to 4365 Hunter Road, 4105 Hunter Road and Dorsett’s 221 Truck Stop in Buda.
Authorities seized 180 eight liner gambling machines from these sites and arrested four people. Jacob Juarez, 23, Gary Edward Jentsch, 41, and Joe Cisneros, 50, face misdemeanor charges of Keeping a Gambling Place and Gambling Promotion, as well as a felony charge of Engaging in Organized Crime. Their bond was set at $75,000.
Roger Anthony Juarez, 30, was charged with Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon, a Class A misdemeanor. His bond was set at $25,000.
At the time of the warrant execution, there were about 30 persons operating machines at the 4105 Hunter Road location and about 15 persons at the Buda location.
This is the first gambling bust in Hays County. Sheriff’s deputy Mike Thielen said the organizers came from larger cities.
“They may think of Hays County as ‘Oh, that’s a little podunk county. They are not going to be watching us as closely.’ Unfortunately for them, and fortunately for us and our citizens we’re trying to let them know we are watching them. We
don’t want this activity in the county,” Thielen said.
Eight liner machines are legal if the payout is under $5. Hays County Sheriff Allen Bridges said payouts for these machines were up to $1,000.
Officials would not say where the machines will be stored. They did not know how much money was collected as of Thursday night

Seize nearly $250,000 worth of stolen goods
Police have discovered where the stolen vehicles of some northeast Calgarians have ended up.
Following an investigation with the RCMP, Calgary cops have busted a chop shop on a 40-acre piece of land northeast of city limits, seizing nearly $250,000 worth of stolen property.
A 50-year-old man was arrested.
Staff Sgt. Rick Halford said investigators discovered a number of vehicles and parts at the Sunshine Tree Farm and Nursery, including two Bobcats, two Dodge pickup trucks, a cube van, and three ATVs.
Halford said investigators don’t think the nursery was a legitimate business and there’s indications the chop shop may be linked to others.
“There are probably others out there we don’t know about,” said Halford.
Halford said it’s not known whether just the parts or entire vehicles were being sold illegally.
It’s not known whether any other people connected to the chop shop will be charged.
Halford said police believe many of the vehicles stolen from the industrial areas of the city’s northeast may have been taken to the chop shop.
Calgarians are warned to keep their vehicles locked and secure, said Halford.
Rocco Amoruso, 50, of Calgary, has been charged with several counts of possession of stolen property.
Hells Angels clubhouses raided in Morning Busts
-from toronto.ctv.ca-
Police swooped down on several locations in Toronto and Ontario, plus two other provinces, as part of a series of raids on Hells Angels clubhouses and their affiliates early Wednesday morning.
In Toronto “approximately 12 locations” were targeted in the raids, according to Ontario Provincial Police Const. Pam Higham. One person was reportedly arrested but later released at a suspected biker clubhouse on Toronto’s Eastern Avenue.
“We’re expecting to get somewhere in the area of 40 arrests and we’re supposed to get pounds and pounds and pounds of drugs, weapons, and other paraphernalia,” Higham told CTV Newsnet.
But Toronto was only one of another 20 locations throughout Ontario, as well as “a few more” believed to be in New Brunswick and British Columbia.
Police raids led by the Biker Enforcement Unit started in Toronto at about 5:30 a.m. Twenty-seven tactical teams were involved in the raids, Higham said.
Dubbed Project Develop, the raids were the result of an 18-month investigation by the Biker Enforcement Unit.
The unit is made up of representatives from 18 different police agencies in Ontario, plus members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Criminal Intelligence Service of Ontario.
But police were tight-lipped about details when contacted this morning.
“There were several warrants executed, buildings entered, by a number of police services throughout Ontario and beyond,” OPP officer Bob Paterson told CTV.ca by telephone from Toronto Police 55 Division.
He added that more details would be released later in the morning and that a press conference is planned for Thursday.
But Higham said they are viewing the operation as a success.
“It appears at this point to be successful. We are still waiting for some teams to report in so I might be a little sketchy on some of the details. But it looks good so far.”
